Gnomon
Latex Paint, Mirror, and Projection Installation
37" x 38"
2013

A gnomon is the part of a sundial that casts the shadow; In ancient Greek the word means “one who discerns,” or “that which reveals;” In Geometry Euclid used the term to mean the fragmentation of form by the removal of a shape from the corner of a larger identical shape, and it was extended to mean the general self-similarity of parts to a whole, as in a fractal: Thus, a fragmented, multiplicitous shadow that reveals. By reflecting the projection in a mirror, there are multiple points of intersection in which the viewer’s body can obstruct the beam. The viewer’s shadow is therefore also fractured and multiplied, echoing the gnomonization of the square imagery. This studio installation is a prototype for a larger mirrored projection negation installation.
