Circle
Performance and Installation using Cyclical Rear Projection Table, Chair, Digital Projection, and Charcoal and Erasure on Vellum
Installation Variable, Table: 45" x 40" x 29"; Drawings: 12.5" x 16"
2013

The perfect circle has long been touted as an artistic and spiritual ideal. But the impossibility of reaching of such an ideal is superseded by the beauty of the struggle itself. In this merging of the digital and the analogue self, the process of drawing the circle is projected on a 20 second delay onto same paper, creating an infinite loop of matching the human hand to the digital hand, accepting and rehearsing the flaws of every pass. By alternating between drawing and erasure, the circle is at all times both created and undone simultaneously by the digital and analogue hands.

The ritualized performance is done once daily during an exhibition and weekly in my own studio. The presence of an audience is merely incidental.
