It Is
projection, Video, Acrylic on canvas

2012

This project stemmed from a contemplation on the ways meaning and truth are constructed. I began by recording video of shadows of Plato's ideal forms moving across the canvas. Next I projected these shadow videos, interspersed with footage of the natural light that fell incidentally onto the canvas through my studio window. I then painted the canvas in reaction to the projected video. At some moments the paint reinforces, negates, anticipates, follows, or attempts to control the shadows, always grasping at a somewhat paradoxical and implausible correspondent truth.

Ultimately, the canvas was gradually painted back to white, and photographs of each successive layer of paint were then compiled into a stop motion video. This video is projected along with the corresponding shadow footage onto that now-white canvas where it all took place. The result is a painting in a perpetual state of ambiguous self-creation.
