Constructing rock piles has been a method of connecting to and memorializing a spiritual moment or location for thousands of years. The tradition spans many faith backgrounds, including Judeo-Christian, Zen Buddhism, and Native American Vision Quests. The very impulse to create such a monument betrays an awareness of the ephemeral nature of such a spiritual moment. This project involves the projection of images of the construction of a stone pile onto glow in the dark paint pooled in a relief of cupped hands. The paint, activated by the projection, then captures a sort of monochromatic, photographic glow of the image, which fades, slipping away over time, to be refreshed and replaced by the next projected image.
